Audience Feedback from Music Promo Pitch

After pitching my new music promo to my peers I asked them for feedback, any questions they had or issues they wanted to bring to me.

Feedback

- Making the concept and symbolise of the music promo clear.
My peers asked whether it my theme of purity was going to be clear enough and displayed effectively through my location.

- Balance between performance and concept elements in the promo.
It was suggested that the balance between the concept and performance elements in my music promo may be to one sided; having to much concept with only a very small amount of performance.
I will keep having less performance than concept however I could maybe try to include performance shots more within the music promo and mixed with the concept scenes.

- Am I creating star image?
I will be creating star image by only featuring my lead singer throughout my music promo. In the performance shots the musicians faces are not shown, focusing on the instruments not the people. This also brings focus to the lead singer as there is now one else to be distracted by.

- Has it conformed to conventions of the alternative genre?
My peers suggested that there could be ways in which I could use more conventions of the alternative genre to make the song match better with the video.

Lyrics Analysis - Pure

I analysed the lyrics to the song Pure, whilst analysing I made notes next to the lyrics adding to my filming plan. Picking our certain lyrics that I wanted to film in specific locations and how I wanted the video to evolve.

New Location Scout

I needed a new location to film in as my original location does not fit with the song I have chosen to make a music promo for.

After looking through the lyrics, one the ideal locations to film in would be a church as there are links to being 'pure' in the song. All Saints Church would be an ideal location as it is big and has a courtyard, meaning there is a bigger variety of places to film in.

I took some photos around the church and a video of the front of main building.

Change of Song

After my pitch and looking through my animatic storyboards and discussing my ideas, I have decided to change the song I am using for my music promo.

I have changed song as the track I had originally chosen didn't sound alternative and didn't fit with my research I had previously done. The track was too 'pop' compared to the music promo analysis I have done which is alternative rock.

I have changed my track to 'Pure' by Hey Violet as it has a more urban and alternative rock feel. This way synergy will be seen across all three of my products that I will be creating.

Digipak Design

I have started to design my digipak for my final product. Taking on my ideas from my planning but also looking back at my research I came up with some sketches that represent the type design I wanted for my digipak.

Website Design

I created a simple plan of the layout that I would use for the website homepage. I used my research of other website homages for the bands from the same genre, to guide my plan. I took inspiration from them and developed my own basic plan.

Audience Feedback from Pitch - Old

After my pitch to my peers about my music promo idea they gave me feedback and questions to help me further my research and planning.

- A continuous video may be hard to film
My peers bought up some issues that I may have trying to film in one shot; things may go wrong meaning I may have to retry. They suggested to me to film smaller parts but still follow the road, this way it can still look like a continuous shot video but will be far easier to film.

- The final product may look staggered
After discussing filming a continuous shot video, we came across another problem, the video may look staggered if the location jumps forward within each shot. To stop this I will need to plan out my different shots so that where one stops the next will start in the same place. This way to video should look seamless and not staggered.

- The actor cannot lip sync for the entire time of filming
In response to this I have decided to only have my actor sing certain lines of the song, this brings emphasis to specific lyrics. It also allows me to use a wider range of shots when filming as the camera does not need to facing the actor.

- How to create star image
The actor will be the main focus of the music promo throughout the video, for example using shots such as close ups.

Costume and Make Up

Through my research I have found that there is synergy with costume and make up across the alternative genre.
Many music promos from this genre have similar costumes that link to the genre, this makes it more relatable for the target audience.

For the costume a stereotypical black leather jacket and black skinny jeans fit with the alternative genre.

Black is a stereotypical colour that is worn by teenagers and young adults, and fans of the genre. By making the clothing worn by the actor relatable, it may encourage new audiences to take more interest in the band and their music.

For make up I have also looked at the make up worn by artists within the alternative. Black winged eyeliner is very common amongst female artists, in the alternative genre. Black is the standard eyeliner colour and can be stereotypically linked to people who would either make or listening to this genre of music.

Casting

For my music promo I have cast two people both girls, a main character and an assisting role.
Alex - 16 [Lead role]
- Casting people who my target audience can relate to
I have cast girls because the song is from a girl’s perspective.
- Many pop-punk // alt rock music promos feature male characters so casting female parts goes against this stereotype.
- The lead singer is female so it would make sense to cast a female as a lead role.

Izzy - 16 [Assisting]
- To break up my shots I need another person to walking in front of the camera or 'distract' it.
- By having some who can walk in front of the camera or change the focus, it will enable me to edit to shots together to look like one

Filming Plan - Old

I have created a filming plan for the day of my shoot. This plan will help me to film in a certain time and be as efficient as possible.

Risk Assessment - Old

There are risks that come with filming on location, so I have created a rick assessment to make sure safety is ensured during filming.

Location - Old

I have had trouble finding a location to film in, however I have now chosen to film on the grounds around Bisham Abbey Sports Centre and Bisham Abbey Sailing School.

I have chosen to film in this location because there is a long road that leads up to the river, it passes the sports centre and its facilities, the old Abbey building and then the sailing school. This makes an ideal location as there is a change whilst still in the same location making the video interesting to watch.
The road is also winding and reasonably long, meaning the walk from the entrance to the river is a few minutes, making it ideal to film the video here.

Digipak Ideas - Old

I have had some initial ideas for the digital I will be creating. I brainstormed different ideas of what I could do for some of the different panels.

After my initial ideas I know what my digipak will look like, I will take pictures from the location I am filming at and also a few of my actor. By having the actor I am creating star image whilst also having a nice contrast of the scenery.

Website Homepage Ideas

Instead of creating a magazine page I am going to make a website homepage, through my research I have found similarities in websites for bands within the same genre.
Taking this into consideration I have made a few ideas of what the homepage will look like.

I have come up with a design that I will follow, it will be simple but using darker colours which suit the pop-punk//alt rock genre.

Animatic Storyboard (Forget Me Now) - First Draft

This is the first draft of my animatic storyboard which I have created as planning for my music promo.
After feedback I will go back and edit my storyboard to build upon it and make it more effective.
